Daniel Hans Erwin Zimmermann è un batterista metal tedesco (Nürnberg, Germany) famoso grazie alla sua collaborazione con i Gamma Ray ed i Freedom Call, la band che ha co-fondato nel 1998 con Chris Bay.
Emiliano Cantiano – Come e quando hai iniziato a suonare la batteria?
When did you start to play drums
Daniel Zimmermann – Ho iniziato a 12 anni. A quell’età mi hanno regalato una batteria di una vecchia casa costruttrice tedesca che si chiamava RIMMEL.
I started in the age of 12, when I got my first drumkit. It was a drumkit of an old German company called “Rimmel”
Emiliano Cantiano – …e quindi hai iniziato subito sullo strumento e con lo studio! 
…and you started studying the instrument. Who did you start to study with?
Daniel Zimmermann – Si. Effettivamente ho iniziato a studiare con un batterista della mia città Nürnberg. Si chiama Yogo Pausch ed è grazie a lui che ho iniziato a studiare ed applicare i primi rudimenti sul drumkit.
With a drummer from my hometown Nürnberg. His name is Yogo Pausch. He gave me my first drum lessons.
Emiliano Cantiano – In quegli anni, quando si è giovani e facilmente attratti dai miti, chi erano i tuoi eroi musicali e chi ti ha influenzato maggiormente?

Emiliano Cantiano – Al momento a cosa ti stai dedicando da un punto di vista dello studio dello strumento?
Which is your current program/syllabus?
Daniel Zimmermann – Mi sto concentrando molto sulla tecnica delle mani e dei piedi per aumentare e migliorare sia la velocità che il controllo. Vedi non bisogna mai fermarsi ed accontentarsi dei risultati raggiunti.
At the moment I’m practising hand technique and foot technique to keep em going fast and strong.
Emiliano Cantiano – Quando ti siedi davanti ad un drum set cosa cerchi di ottenere e come lo adatti alla tua postura?
How do you chose the placemement of your drumkit?
Daniel Zimmermann – La prima cosa che guardo è l’angolo della cassa. Per me è molto importante perché è da questo fattore che ottengo potenza e velocità. Il resto lo sistemo utilizzando gli spazi in modo ampio ed intelligente. Mi piace avere aria e movimento intorno a me. Sono un ragazzo alto con braccia lunghe, quindi devo avere spazio intorno a me! (…risate)
The angle of the bass drums is important to me to gain optimum power and speed. Everything is set up in a wide range to have space to move. I’m a tall guy with relatively long arms so I need that space.
Emiliano Cantiano – Come accordi la batteria?
What kind of tune do you chose for your drumheads?
Daniel Zimmermann – Regolo la pelle della cassa e dei tom molto lenta per ottenere un suono profondo con poco sustain ed un grosso attacco. Il rullante è accordato leggermente più alto per un attacco decente ed un suono fresco.
I tune my toms and bassdrums very low to have a deep and tight sound with less sustain and a big attack! The snare is tuned a little bit higher to have a good attack and a crisp sound.
Emiliano Cantiano – E per quanto riguarda il pedale? Come regoli la tensione della molla?
How do you adjust (regulate) the springs of your pedal?
Daniel Zimmermann – La lascio molto lenta. In questo modo è molto più semplice il controllo ed il fatto che il battente ha un ritorno più lento mi consente di avere maggiore potenza. Ovviamente questa scelta mi penalizza molto nei brani veloci e devo fare maggior fatica.
It’s adjusted very loose. It is easier to controll the pedal, it is bouncing back slower and you have more power. Of course it is harder work during the fast songs.
Emiliano Cantiano – Come di scaldi prima di un concerto?
What kind of warm up do you chose before the shows?
Daniel Zimmermann – Tutto! Piedi, polsi, dita. Effettuo esercizi di riscaldamento per ogni muscolo che dovrò utilizzare durante lo show.
Finger, wrist and foot exercises everything I’ll need durino the show.
Emiliano Cantiano – Ogni quanto sostituisci le pelli del tuo set durante i tour?
How often do you change the drumheads during a tour?
Daniel Zimmermann – Tre o quattro. Vedi non sono un “distruttore” di pelli.
Three, maybe four times, usually I’m no drumhead destroyer.
Emiliano Cantiano – Quali sono gli aspetti del tuo drumming che reputi di assoluto valore e dei veri e propri punti di forza?
Which are the aspects of your drumming that you consider the most powerful?
Daniel Zimmermann – Il mio drumming è molto potente. Questo mi caratterizza molto ma mi piace far notare quanto, nonostante la potenza, la musicalità e la precisione non manchino. Si riescono a trasmettere emozioni anche con queste caratteristiche. (risate)
My drumming in general is very powerful. The aspects I’d like to mention is preciseness, musically, powerful, transfering emotions.
Emiliano Cantiano – Secondo te quali sono le qualità che deve possedere un batterista per essere un buon Metal Drummer?
Which are the the qualities that a good metal drummer must have, in your opinion?
Daniel Zimmermann – Precisione, musicalità, potenza e… trasmettere emozioni (…risate)

Emiliano Cantiano – Parlaci della scena metal che si respira in Germania, è veramente così diversa rispetto a quella americana?
Tell us something about the scene of metal in Germany: is it so different from the american one?
Daniel Zimmermann – Secondo me si. Il metal europeo è più potente e forte.
To me there is a difference. The European Metal is stronger.
Emiliano Cantiano – Qual è il pattern preferito che hai registrato e che esegui più volte dal vivo?
Which is your favourite pattern (among the ones you recorded) and that you play the most during the concerts?
Daniel Zimmermann – È il pattern più semplice che tu possa mai immaginare. dugatagadugatagadugataga… capisci cosa intendo dire? (risate) È un pattern in ottavi ripetuto costantemente con piede destro e piede sinistro, rullante sul 2 e 4 e hihat in 4/4 con piccole varianti.
It is the simplest pattern you can imagine: dugatagadugatagadugataga……you know what I mean 😎 Its a constant eight note pattern RL with feet, snare on two and four and a quater note ride or hihat cymbal pattern with little extensions.
Emiliano Cantiano – Come ti prepari per una sessione di registrazione?
How do you you train for the recording studio session?
Daniel Zimmermann – Solitamente mi preparo con il brano in cuffia, soprattutto quando non c’è molto tempo per suonare con la band e provare con loro le varianti o provare diversi arrangiamenti.
I usually play along with the demos in case we don’t rehearse a song and try to figure out different possibilities for the drum arrangement.

Emiliano Cantiano – Un consiglio da dare ai batteristi che studiano e che vogliono intraprendere il lavoro di metal drummer?
Can you give an advice to all those that study drums and that want to become metal drummers?
Daniel Zimmermann – Essere pazienti e studiare moltissimo. Prefissare un obiettivo e creare una scaletta da seguire per raggiungerlo. Lavorare costantemente sullo strumento e spingersi sempre fino al limite. Essere propensi a sudare e soffrire molto.
Be patient and rehearse as much as you can, set yourself a goal, make a practise plan. Work on your instrument constantly and push yourself to the limit, be willing to suffer pain and sweat. Rehearse concentrated.
