Planet Drum – When did you start to playing drums?
Quando hai iniziato a suonare la batteria?
Flo Mounier – I started playing drums at age 13. My father brought home an old Slingerland kit that he repaired and repainted. It did the job.
Ho iniziato a suonare la batteria a 13 anni. Un giorno mio padre portò a casa una vecchia Slingerland che aveva appena riparato e riverniciato. Il resto l’ho fatto io.
Planet Drum – Who are the drummers that influenced your style?
Quali sono stati i batteristi che hanno maggiormente influenzato il tuo stile?
Flo Mounier – There are so many different ones. Its hard to answer such a question. I will name a few. Dennis Chambers, Kenneth Schalk, John Bohnam, Buddy Rich, Gene Hoglan, etc…

Planet Drum – Who did you start to study with?
Con chi hai iniziato a studiare la batteria? 
Flo Mounier – I studied with a few local teachers never long enough to really get anywhere, except for Bruno Roy from Montreal. He really opened my rudiment playing and was a good inspiration.
Ho iniziato a studiare con alcuni insegnanti della mia città. Purtroppo non ho mai studiato a sufficienza per poter raggiungere obiettivi di un certo livello ad eccezione del periodo speso con Bruno Roy di Montreal. Bruno ha veramente aperto i miei rudimenti ed è stata una grosse fonte di ispirazione.
Planet Drum – Which is your current program/syllabus?
Qual è attualmente il tuo programma di studio?
Flo Mounier -It changes depending on the time I have and if I’m at home. I try to get some endurance excercises in when I practice and then focus more on creating ideas for new material. I’m not the kind of guy that can sit down behind the kit and practice for 8 hours a day. But a couple hours here and there are important.
Varia in base al tempo che ho a disposizione e se mi trovo a casa o meno.
Cerco di fare degli esercizi sulla resistenza fisica per poi passare alla fase creativa per del materiale nuovo. Non sono il tipo di persona che si siede dietro la batteria a studiare per 8 ore al giorno. Però un paio di ore qua e la sono importanti.
Planet Drum – What kind of tune do you chose for your drumheads?
Che tipo di accordatura utilizzi per le tue pelli?
Flo Mounier – It all depends on the drums. Bass drum heads are pretty loose to get a nice punch. Snare is usually tight to get a nice rebound and so that it cuts through the mix. And toms are kind of in between, not to tight and not to loose, a comfortable feel and nice sustain.
Dipende tutto dalla batteria. Le pelli della cassa rimangono solitamente molto lente per ottenere la botta. Il rullante è solitamente tirato per aiutare il rimbalzo e per avere un suono tagliente. I toms sono tirati grosso modo a metà tra cassa e rullante. Nè troppo tirati né troppo lenti. Un feel confortevole ed un sustain gradevole.
Planet Drum – 6-How do you chose the placemement of your drumkit?
Come scegli il modo di posizionare il drumkit?
Flo Mounier – That depends. My kit changes a lot, and I like to try new configurations out. What I try to do consistantly though is place things in a way that feels natural to reach for and that won’t waste any of my energy in aquard movements. It’s gotta feel natural to sound natural.
Dipende. Il mio kit cambia molto spesso e a me piace cambiare spesso le configurazioni possibili.
Quello che cerco di fare, con insistenza, è posizionare gli strumenti in modo che possano essere suonati in modo confortevole e naturale e senza sprechi eccessivi ed inutili di energia per movimenti improbabili. Devi sentirti naturale per suonare naturale e risultare naturale agli altri.
Planet Drum – What kind of warm up do you chose before the shows?
Come ti riscaldi prima dei concerti?
Flo Mounier – Without getting into the specifics and to much detail, what I do consists of about 30 to 45 minutes of warming up, doing different rudiments with the hands and feet using different grips and positions to warm up different muscle groups. I then air drum about 30 seconds of the beginning of every song to be performed that show. After that I do some stretching excercises and get ready to hit the stage.
Senza entrare troppo nei particolari, posso dire che mi riscaldo per circa 30, 45 minuti. Eseguo diversi tipi di rudimenti con piedi e mani utilizzando diverse impugnature e posizioni in modo da scaldare tutti i gruppi di muscoli interessati. Dopodiché suono i primi 30 secondi di ogni canzone che sarà presentata al concerto. Infine faccio un po’ di stretching e sono pronto per il palco.
Planet Drum – How do you adjust (regulate) the springs of you pedal?
Come regoli le molle del tuo pedale?
Flo Mounier – I play them fairly loose cause I want the power of a heavy stroke. It works for me cause I use the ankle to do a lot of the fast stuff and have established good control and power there.
Le regolo relativamente lente perchè desidero la potenza del colpo pesante. Per me funziona perché utilizzo la caviglia per le cose molto veloci ed ho sviluppato un buon controllo ed una buona potenza.
Planet Drum – How often do you change the drumheads during a tour?
Ogni quanto cambi le pelli durante i tour?
Flo Mounier – About every 8 to 9 shows

Planet Drum – Which are the aspects of your drumming that you consider the most powerful?
Quali sono i punti di forza del tuo drumming?
Flo Mounier – Hard for me to judge myself. I think that I bring a certain dynamic to this genre of playing using other styles and feels. Speed and power are cool, but being tasty is really cool.
E’ difficile per me giudicarmi. Credo di portare una certa dinamica a questo genere musicale utilizzando altri stili ed altri feels. Velocità e potenza è fico, ma il gusto musicale e più fico!
Planet Drum – Which are the the qualities that a good metal drummer must have, in your opinion?
Secondo te, quali sono le qualità che un buon metal drummer deve avere?
Flo Mounier – To be as much of an ALL-AROUND drummer as possible. Don’t limit yourself to one style.
Essere un batterista il più versatile possibile. Non limitarsi ad un solo stile.
Planet Drum – Tell us something about the scene of metal in Canada&U.S.A.: is it so different from the european one?
Parlaci della scena metal che si respira in Canada e negli Stati Uniti; è così diversa da quella europea?
Flo Mounier – No it’s not much different. Some cities have good metal scenes and others don’t. The metal scene in North America is generally good.
No, non è così diversa. Alcune città hanno un’ottima scena metal, altre no. In genere il metal in Nord America è buono.
Planet Drum – Which is your favourite pattern (among the ones you recorded) and that you play the most during the concerts?
Qualè il pattern che preferisci (tra quelli che hai registrato) e che utilizzi di più durante i concerti?
Flo Mounier – Anything that you can call grooving. Patterns that make people move, not one in particular.
Qualsiasi cosa che si può definire groove. Patterns che fanno muovere le persone, nessuno in particolare.
Planet Drum – How do you train for the recording studio session?
Come ti prepari per le session di registrazione?
Flo Mounier – The same way I would before a show, only repetition of the new material is key. Warming up is important before any session or show, clinic, etc…
Nello stesso modo in cui mi preparo per uno show. La chiave è ripetere il nuovo materiale da suonare. Il riscaldamento è importante prima di ogni show o session, clinic, ecc…

Flo Mounier – Hopefully a teacher student relationship .lol. I try to be as smooth as possible and helpful.

Planet Drum – I saw you make clinics , which are the questions that people often ask you and which is the program of your clinics?
Ho notato che fai molte clinic. Quali sono le domande che ti rivolgono più di frequente e quale programma utilizzi per le tue clinic?
Flo Mounier – People usually ask questions regarding hand and foot techniques. I usually play to tracks, about 4 to 5 , then i do a solo anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. Then I do some question answers and demonstrate different techniques. Clinics last about 2 hours.
Le persone solitamente fanno domande sulla tecnica sia per le mani che per i piedi. Solitamente suono su delle basi, circa 4/5, poi eseguo un solo per circa 15/30 minuti. Infine rispondo alle domande che mi pongono e mostro le diverse tecniche esecutive.

Flo Mounier – It shows a bunch of exercises for speed, power and endurance. Along with techniques, gripping, stretching, warm ups and live footage, solos, special events, etc…
There’s a lot on it and its fun to watch. I have gotten some really good feedback from people that have learned a lot from it.

Planet Drum – Which are your favourite albums, the ones that made you fall in love with drums?
Quali sono gli album che preferisci e che ti hanno fatto innamorare della batteria?
Flo Mounier – Again there are so many great albums it’s impossible for me to pic one or more favourites.
When I was younger i can say that Slayers South of Heaven influenced me to play faster.
King Diamond’s Them was really inspirering as well. The list goes on and on and on.
Ce ne sono così tanti che è impossibile prenderne uno solo. Quando ero giovane posso dire che Slayers South degli Heaven mi ha spinto a suonare velocemente.
