African Mahogany has all the characteristics of a great tone wood. Its weight and strength produce a well-balanced tone range and strong volume. African Mahogany produces approximately a 20% increase to low frequency resonance to a comparable maple shell. Mid and high frequencies are similar to Maple but due to the increased lower frequency response, the Gretsch Renown Purewood Mahogany is perceived to have a overall warmer tonal characteristic.
