Intervista a Vinnie Appice
Vinnie Appice ha suonato dal vivo e in studio con le band DIO, BLACK SABBATH, HEAVEN AND HELL, OZZY OSBURNE, WWIII, AXIS, RICK DERRINGER e, all’età di 16 anni ha suonato con JOHN LENNON “live” sul palco e in studio. Vinny ha registrato e co-scritto canzoni su oltre 25 album e CD, molti dei quali sono divenuti album multi-platinoe continuano a vendere numerose copie e download oggi stesso!
1 – Anche se hai suonato con un sacco di artisti, quale esperienza ti è rimasta nel cuore maggiormente?
Ho lavorato con John Lennon nel 1975, con lui è stata un’esperienza incredibile solo per essere nella stessa stanza con una leggenda come lui. Ero molto giovane allora, osservavo come John affrontava le cose e il suo pensiero riguardo la musica. Ho fatto qualche video, dischi e concerti dal vivo con John.
2 – C’è mai stata invidia, gelosia o concorrenza tra i fratelli Appice?
No, ci siamo sempre rispettati l’uno con l’altro e ammirati con orgoglio. È molto insolito avere due batteristi nella stessa famiglia. Abbiamo sempre condiviso le nostre idee batteristiche e ci sostenevamo a vicenda in caso di necessità. C’è solo della sana competizione amichevole quando siamo sul palco, una cosa che rende il tutto molto eccitante.
3 – Chi di voi ha spinto l’altro a non mollare mai?
Noi siamo di New York e i newyorkesi non mollano mai quindi, non abbiamo mai dovuto farlo. Siamo degli animali della batteria!
4 – Come è nata l’idea della drum battle?
Abbiamo fatto diverse clinic nel 1990 che sono andate così bene che abbiamo voluto farne delle altre. Entrambi abbiamo ammirato i vecchi video di Buddy Rich contro Gene Krupa, da li abbiamo preso l’ispirazione.
5 – Quale batterista ti ha influenzato più di tutti?
Buddy Rich, Carmine, Bonham e Billy Cobham
6 – C’è il “ribelle” e il “metodico” tra di voi? Se si, chi è il primo e chi il secondo?
Io sono il ribelle ora, Carmine era un ribelle da ragazzo ora è più metodico
7 – Hai ancora voglia di studiare o hai rinunciato?
Ho sempre voglia di imparare, non è si è mai troppo bravi. Qusto è il segreto per mantenere il nostro drumming fresco e interessante.
8 – Che cosa consigli a un giovane batterista?
Imparare a leggere e studiare con metodo. Ascoltare altri batteristi e prendere spunti per renderli propri. Suonare sempre con il cuore, con il tatto e con l’anima.
9 – Che tipo di progetto dobbiamo aspettarci per il futuro?
Entrambi continueremo a svolgere le Drum Battle rendendole migliori ogni volta. Ho una nuova band con l’ex bassista dei Pantera, Rex Brown, che si chiama “Kill Devil Hill”, è una grande band con un gran bel nuovo CD che è stato pubblicato a giugno.

1- Even if you played with a lot of top artists, which experience remained in your heart most of all?
I worked with John Lennon in 1975, its was an amazing experience just to be in the same room with a legend like. that. I was very young at the time and observed how he approached things and his thoughts regarding music etc. I did a few videos, recordings and a live gig with John.
2- Has there ever been envy, jealousy or competition between you two?
No we always respected each other and admired each other proudly. Very unusual having two drummers in the same family. We always shared drumming ideas and we supported each other when needed. There is friendly competition when we are on stage which makes it exciting.
3- Which of you has spurred the other to never give up?
We are from New York and New Yorkers never give up so we never had to do that. We are drumming animals!
4- How did you get the idea of the drum battle?
Wedid a bunch of clinics in 1990 and it went so well we wanted to do more when possible. We both admired the old videos of Buddy Rich vs Gene Krupa and that was our inspiration.
5- Which drummers influenced you most of all?
Buddy Rich, Carmine, Bonham and Billy Cobham
6- Is there the more “rebel” and the more methodic between you? If there is, which is the former and which is the latter?
I am the rebel now, Carmine was a rebel in the early days now he is more methodic
7- Do you still want to study or did you give it up?
Always want to learn more , never too much to learn. That’s how your drumming stays fresh and interesting.
8- What do you recommend to a young drummer?
Learn how to read and practice. Listen to other drummers and pickup licks or riffs and make them your own style. Always play from your heart with feel and soul.
9- What kind of project do we have to expect for the future?
We both will continue to perform Drum Wars making it better each time. I have a new band with ex Pantera bassist Rex Brown called Kill Devil Hill , it’s a great new band with our new CD that was released in June.
